WINNING POEMS : AGE 11 & UNDER CATEGORY

MOST PROMISING POET : AMELIA EVA SEEPERSAD (AGE 7)

DADDY'S GARDEN

In the garden everyday
Daddy toils both night and day
Cutting and spraying; keeping
the grass and pests at bay.
Digging and plowing,
under the sun’s unforgiving ray.

In the garden everyday
Daddy toils both night and day
Plants, taken from a tray is planted
with prayers and love; with hope
that God up above will shine his favour
and someday we’ll reap the fruits
of daddy’s hard labour.

In the garden everyday
Daddy toils both night and day
Pests and diseases were kept away;
The trees are fruitful, their bunches sway
From this rich land, the harvest is grand.
Yes, prayers, sweat and tears pave the way,
Towards a brighter future
for my brother and I someday.

POET OF MERIT : ANTORIA LYNCH (AGE 11)

TRINIDAD

The Humming-bird breeze blows,
as leaves are called upon the streets.
They all cry with great agony
as they're being crushed by feet.
The flowers’ beauty blooms big on the crack of dawn.
Until the beauty goes flashing by and all of it is gone.
The children run like they're mad up and down the street.
Till they're sweating from head to toe,
so they search for shelter and have a nice seat.
The waters pound powerful on the rocks
as blue as blue can be.
Take a quick dip
into the crystal blue sea.
Trinidad, what beauty it gathers,
It stays just the same
in any sort of weather.

3RD PLACE WINNER : CERGIO AUGUSTINE (AGE 9)

LOOK IN THE DARK ROOM

Look in the dark room
Look in my memories
Stuck seeing all the bad things
Instead of good things
So let him sleep in peace!

Going back to the times when
I got in trouble
And had marks on my body.
Even though I ask some questions
My family doesn’t answer.
Even though I love my family
I might not get what I want
So I have to live with it.
So I do

Hot streams flow like water
You might think you feel the water
But you don’t
So let him sleep in peace!

Nothing makes me happy when
I look at the news.
Pain, sadness, troubles, hardship and death.
Nothing makes me happy but to see my dear friend,
Neighbour and cousin come out that coffin.

Please have a cool day.
Don’t look in the Dark Room.
Go in the Closet
It will give you a better paradise.
